#CPChatNow Recap- 04-20-2016

Every week the live cerebral palsy Twitter chat #CPChatNow demonstrates our community’s multi-faceted nature. Hi, co-host Zachary Fenell here to dissect what that means. Allow me to do so by recapping the April 20th Twitter chat.

When I tell someone about #CPChatNow, I use the phrase “online support group for those with cerebral palsy.” The way we provide support proves multi-faceted. We offer an open forum to ask questions and better understand CP.

Has anyone dealt with stress fractures?CPChatNow's stress fractures discussion transitions to talk about falls.Plus we work as a problem solving think tank.

CPChatNow discusses possible accommodations in an effort to problem solve a fellow community member's challenge. Then the weekly Twitter chat also supplies a chance to bond over cerebral palsy related commonalities!

#CPChatNow community members chat about physical education modifications.Personally I want as many people possible to enjoy #CPChatNow’s supports. Hence I started the extend-the-conversation question. You do not need Twitter or any social media to participate! Simply read the recap and leave a comment to answer the week’s question. This time around answer the following.

“What modifications, if any, did you receive for PE?”

Moving on, our multi-faceted supports leaves community members holding #CPChatNow in high regards. Even to the point where internationally people partake at crazy hours!

Ela joins in #CPChatNow at 3am!Come experience our incredible community for yourself! We give you the opportunity every Wednesday at 8pm ET. Join us on Facebook too. Like the CPChatNow Facebook fan page! There we post cerebral palsy related articles daily.

Keep the conversation going! Answer "What modifications, if any, did you receive for PE?"Finally, remember to answer the week’s extend-the-conversation question.

“What modifications, if any, did you receive for PE?”

Respond by leaving a comment below!

Thanks for checking out the recap.

  1. In elementary school besides for the therapist I was telling you about, none. High school I got so traumatized by all the balls flying past my head in some weird game that I made the gym teacher angry. But later talked about it with her and now I just walk or run around the school during gym. This one didn’t load yesterday for some reason. The only one I saw was the one before.

    • Thanks for sharing Shira. On Facebook I encouraged some of our participants to come check out your comment, interact with you, and make you feel welcome. I’m glad your gym teacher was open to working with you.

  2. Hi Shira! I would encourage you to talk through issues with your teacher. It’s hard, but they might not know what you need or even that you’re having issues.
I always lifted weights instead of the games in PE in North Dakota. It was cool and I got to hang out with the football players who were my heroes. But when I moved to Texas they didn’t really know what to do with me and put me in adaptive PE. That was fine, but many of the other students had much lower functioning than I did. It make it hard to relate to them.

    • Yeah. I talk to my teachers and set up meetings all the time. Most of the time it’s easy( been forced to do stuff like that since I was little. Only way for me to get what I needed after a point). If nothing else, having CP, regardless of the level of severity, having it has taught me how to advocate for myself on a daily basis. I don’t always know what i need at first, my limits change as I grow older, but I try. My teachers might not always like where the discussions head, but they know as well as I do that sometimes annoying things have to be done to accommodate.
Another thing: the more of a personal relationship I have with a teacher the faster and more efficiently the problems are dealt with. Probably because they’ve taken the time to get to know me and so have a better idea of what could solve the problem that pops up. I wonder if it’s just me like that…

That’s so awesome that you got to enjoy yourself like that But it sucks that when you moved you were treated like that. I’ve been in similar situations, I can relate. Hopefully one day things will be different. Do you think it will though?
