#CPChatNow Recap- 04-05-2017

Hit sitcom Speechless and aging with cerebral palsy proved popular topics during the April 5th, 2017 #CPChatNow. I am co-host Zachary Fenell here with the better late than never Twitter chat recap. Conversation turned to Speechless shortly after our usual Wednesday evening salutations.

Zachary asks about topics people want to see addressed on the show Speechless.Discussion initiated when I asked about subjects people want to see Speechless address in future episodes. Blemi spoke up, saying she wants to see an episode addressing fake friends. Another participant went further, expressing a desire to guest star on the sitcom. Not as farfetched a possibility as you might think!

Comedian and actress Maysoon Zayid wants to guest star on Speechless as Maya's disabled friend.Yes, actress and comedian Maysoon Zayid popped in to join our Wednesday evening chat. She wishes to guest star on Speechless, playing Maya’s disabled friend and hang/fight with the other moms. Does that sound intriguing to you? Tweet Speechless on Twitter and tell them you want to see Maysoon guest star!

Maysoon’s presence also brought a newcomer to #CPChatNow. He shared what he hopes to see in a future Speechless episode.

Newcomer to #CPChatNow Dave Smith wants to see a variety of CP cases on a Speechless episode.Personally, I like Dave’s idea to showcase the wide spectrum cerebral palsy offers. Your turn, though. Answer for the week’s extend-the-conversation question, “Is there a topic you would like to see Speechless address in its show that they have yet to address?” Respond in the “Comments” section.

Eventually the night’s dialogue moved beyond Speechless. Although the first new topic remained Speechless inspired. The night’s episode delved into the ways teachers interact with their disabled students. #CPChatNow regular Hannah reacted to this.

#CPChatNow participants discuss their teachers and the levels of expectation they possess for disabled students. While Hannah couldn’t relate directly to what happens in the episode, she shared a similar experience and the emotional impact said situation created. Emotions discussed soon transitioned from hurt to fear thanks to chat regular Jen.

Jen wants to discuss fears, a notion seconded by Blemi. Here the previously mentioned aging with cerebral palsy subject arose.

#CPChatNow participants discuss the possibility of losing mobility as they age. Amidst the sharing and peer learning Maysoon offered some well needed positivity.

Maysoon recommends yoga to help combat aging with cerebral palsy. Hamda seconds the suggestion sharing a list of yoga resources. Hamda supported Maysoon’s yoga suggestion, linking to a resource list for adaptive yoga. Checkout the list, courtesy American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. Maybe you will discover something worthwhile to you.

Answer for this week's extend-the-conversation question "Is there a topic you would like to see Speechless address in the show that they have yet to address?"However before viewing the list, remember to answer the extend-the-conversation question. “Is there a topic you would like to see Speechless address in its show that they have yet to address?” Reply below in the “Comments” section.

Thank you for your interest in #CPChatNow. I look forward to tweeting you tonight.

#CPChatNow Recap- 02-01-2017

Various topics arose Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 during our weekly cerebral palsy Twitter chat #CPChatNow. I am co-host Zachary Fenell, ready to summarize everything up into a neat, easy to read recap. Hopefully you enjoyed last week’s recap, compiled by interim co-host Devin Axtman.

Devin continues to fill in admirably for co-host Blake Henry while Blake studies abroad. Tweets from Blake with the hashtag CPChatNow indicates our community remains on his mind. Although due to the time difference, said tweets come outside chat hours. So I thought to begin our February 1st chat by retweeting Blake’s latest update.

Zachary retweets Blake's latest update from Spain.Early on in the chat I also announced the date for our February Google Hangout. This led to some jokes.

#CPChatNow's February 2017 Google Hangout will be Thursday, February 16th.To fully appreciate the echoing humor, you needed to attend our January Google Hangout. Make sure you find your place on the Hangout invite list. Send a DM to Devin and/or me to request receiving the Hangout link Thursday, February 16th.

Usually around 8:30pm ET participants multi-task, contributing to our conversation and watching Speechless. ABC airing a Speechless rerun caused disappointment.

Hannah is bummed to find Speechless a repeat. My interim co-host Devin questioned the broadcasting strategy where you air reruns in consecutive weeks.

Devin thinks airing reruns multiple weeks in a row could cause confusion to viewers.Community regular Hannah pointed out such a strategy seeks to garner a show new viewers. Still, she agreed with Devin.

Meanwhile participant Jen Coventry, after a long day, arrived late to the chat. A fall on ice landed her in the ER. The situation left me referencing a comment I made two weeks ago. I joked we should all move to Tucson, Arizona and establish a snow-free society.

Snow can be very dangerous to the CP community. Jen's fall offers one example.Injuries soon became the dialogue’s concentration.

#CPChatNow participants recall the worst injuries they have endured.Jen's worst injury was an infection.Time to keep the conversation going. Answer for the week’s extend-the-conversation question “What is the worst injury you’ve had to endure?” Respond in the “Comments” section.

Another noteworthy topic that emerged during the February 1st chat involved startle reflex.

Jen Coventry didn't always know startle reflex was connected to cerebral palsy. Both Jens’ comments illustrates how knowing others with cerebral palsy aids in better understanding your own cerebral palsy. Perhaps you will learn something regarding your cerebral palsy tonight. Join us on Twitter starting at 8pm ET. First though, remember to answer the extend-the-conversation question.

This week's extend-the-conversation question asks "What is the worst injury you've had to endure?" “What is the worst injury you’ve had to endure?”

#CPChatNow Recap- 10-05-2016

Spirits remained high during #CPChatNow’s live Twitter chat Wednesday, October 5th, coincidentally also World Cerebral Palsy Day. I am co-host Zachary Fenell, prepared to compact all the enthusiasm down into the traditional weekly recap. #CPChatNow landing on World Cerebral Palsy Day set up a festive atmosphere.

Between #CPChatNow and Speechless October 5th proved a fitting day for World Cerebral Palsy Day.Some participants chose to use our chat to live tweet Speechless. Although, they stayed thoughtful. Considering the show airs at later times in other areas, their dialogue avoided spoilers.

CPChatNow participants discuss Speechless without spoiling the episode for others. Prior to Speechless starting, I sought to stretch the night’s excitement to cover the entire month. First, came our October focus chat announcement.

Announcement for #CPChatNow's October 2016 Focus ChatIf you possess questions about CPTV, please join us tonight. Anyone unfamiliar with CPTV should read our detailed announcement post. The October 2016 CPChatNow Google Hangout will happen Thursday, October 20th.Google Hangouts allow for face-to-face interaction via video chat. Contact my co-host Blake Henry or I about receiving an invite to the October Hangout. These video chats work similarly to our Twitter chats. Topics arise naturally.

One topic brought up during the Twitter chat October 5th involved writing a memoir.

#CPChatNow Recap- 09-28-2016

Wednesday, September 28th chat regulars looked to #CPChatNow for a needed escape. I, co-host Zachary Fenell, among them. Allow me to fill you in on the details via this week’s recap.

Greetings set the tone early.

Greetings set the tone for the September 28th #CPChatNow Twitter chat.As I noted in the recap’s introduction, I too sought an escape through #CPChatNow. Although rather than a bad day, I desired freedom from fatigue.

Zachary seeks escape from fatigue caused by his half marathon training. My co-host Blake Henry also sounded like he could use a break.

Always busy Blake stops in to say hello. Various topics emerged to distract from the tough days, tiredness, and never ending responsibilities. Naturally around 8:30pm ET conversation turned to the sitcom Speechless.

Jen counts down the minutes to the next episode of Speechless.Only two episodes into Speechless and #CPChatNow community members already connect with the characters! One character in-particular seems to resonate more than the others.

Multiple #CPChatNow community members relate to the mother in Speechless. Given news broke Thursday ABC picked up Speechless for a full season, obviously the love affair with the show transcends #CPChatNow. Make arrangements to watch both the show and participate in our chat. Determine the best plan for you, whether that means multi-tasking or recording Speechless to watch later.

Anyone who relates to the sitcom should enjoy the real life connections #CPChatNow offers. We discuss important issues. For instance, September 28th discussion eventually transitioned to pharmacy errors.

Mistakes can happen. Make sure you double check your medications for pharmacy errors.Read the article which led to the subject, “Boy given ten times as much medicine prescribed in pharmacy error.” During the dialogue chat regular Hannah Pike pinpointed another pharmacy error to double check against.

#CPChatNow regular Hannah Pike warns about a second pharmacy error to watch out for. Thanks to a fun hypothetical, the chat ended on a creative note.

Creativity flows from #CPChatNow community members thanks to the question "If you wrote a song about life with cerebral palsy, what would the name of the song be?"#CPChatNow community members come up with creative titles for a song about life with cerebral palsy.“These Spastic Chains,” “An Ordinary Fighter,” and “Invested in Love” only begins to showcase the creativity possessed by our #CPChatNow community. Show off your originality by answering the week’s extend-the-conversation question.

“If you wrote a song about life with cerebral palsy, what would the name of the song be?”

#CPChatNow Recap- 09-21-2016

Anticipation remained high Wednesday, September 21st. Hi! I am Zachary Fenell back behind the keyboard. As #CPChatNow co-host I wish I could credit all the bursting excitement to our Twitter chat. However, the premiering Speechless deserves some dues.

Speechless stars Micah Fowler, a young actor with cerebral palsy. The show follows his character JJ and his family the Dimeos as they live life and deal with JJ’s CP. This includes JJ’s siblings Ray Dimeo (Mason Cook) and Dylan Dimeo (Kyla Kenedy). Each family member receives fitting screen time, at least in the pilot episode.

Anyways, I am not here to critique Speechless. Rather I am tasked to recap our latest Twitter chat. I mention the show because early on conversation centered on the subject.

Jen reminds people Speechless airs at 8:30pm ET.

The #CPChatNow community anticipates the Speechless premiere. While anticipation for Speechless remained high, we managed to discuss other topics. Community regular Hannah Pike shared a photo which escalated the dialogue.Majority of #CPChatNow participants seem to fear escalators.

Community members reveal their first reaction after spotting an escalator.Fear of escalators seems a common fear within the cerebral palsy community.Half an hour into the chat the conversation returned to Speechless.

Without posting spoilers #CPChatNow community members analyze the show. The Speechless analysis purposefully stayed general in an effort to prevent spoiling for regions with later air times. For those who watched the pilot, answer the following for the week’s extend-the-conversation question. “Do you plan to watch Speechless weekly?”

Leave your reply via a comment in the “Comments” section. First though, continue reading the recap. In our second hour I posed a question which triggered chatter.

Zachary triggers conversation by asking "What is one subject you wish you could find more information on when it comes to life with cerebral palsy?" Aging with cerebral palsy proved one topic people want more information on.Most people displayed a curiosity in how cerebral palsy impacts the aging process. One certainty with aging involves seeking advice and emotional support. Items #CPChatNow can provide.

Shira seeks advice about jealousy and frustration. If need advice on life with cerebral palsy, join our Twitter chat Wednesdays, 8pm ET. Or, checkout the #CPChatNow Facebook fan page. Message us so we can discuss posting your question to the Facebook page.

#CPChatNow Recap- 07-06-2016

To kick off July the #CPChatNow community reflected. Co-host Zachary Fenell here, guilty causing said reflections. Everything started with one question.

Co-host Zachary Fenell asks how has #CPChatNow impacted your life. #CPChatNow builds community and lessens feeling isolated.Besides building community to reduce isolation, another common theme emerged from the answers.

Co-host Zachary Fenell talks about how #CPChatNow has made him a better cerebral palsy advocate.

#CPChatNow has helped keep Devin informed about current events in the disability community.Current events actually wound up finding a way into the night’s dialogue as well.

Speechless will focus around a nonverbal young man with cerebral palsy and his family.Speechless revolves around JJ, a nonverbal young man with cerebral palsy, and his family. This three-minute trailer gives a good idea what issues you can expect Speechless to tackle.

While my response to live tweeting Speechless remained partly humorous, doing so could lead to amazing dialogue. Obviously people will need to watch to make live tweeting work. Therefore let me ask as the week’s extend-the-conversation question, “In the fall do you plan to watch Speechless?”  As always respond in the “Comments” section.

Though an exciting buzz surrounds Speechless, let us not overlook the summer. Much summer fun still awaits ahead. Maybe you plan on seeing a couple concerts. If so, you will want to stop by tonight on Twitter for our “Concert Going with Cerebral Palsy” focus chat. Tonight’s focus chat leader Jocelyn dropped in last week to share her excitement for tonight.

Tonight #CPChatNow's own Jocelyn leads a focus chat on concert going with cerebral palsy. My co-host Blake Henry reminded us a second reason to feel excited about the week.

#CPChatNow participants will video chat via Google Hangouts Thursday, July 14th. The chat begins at 8pm ET!Once a month we use Google Hangouts to enjoy a video chat. The invitation goes out around 8pm ET. Do you want to join the Hangouts fun? Please direct message Blake or myself to request an invitation. To maintain a private setting we do not post the link publicly.

Your answer will help determine if we live tweet Speechless in the fall.Meanwhile as you stir in excitement for tomorrow’s Google Hangout and tonight’s focus chat, remember to answer the week’s extend-the-conversation question.
